Dimitrios Is NOT Coming Back

If you are traveling east bound from the city of Gythio, you’ll run into a great, and well-known shipwreck called “Dimitrios”. The ship was built in 1918, and it’s easily visible from the main road, resting for the last 30 some years on the so called Selinitsa beach. Through the grapevine the ship’s cargo was loaded with 7,500 tons of steel, illegal cigars, and cigarettes when it ran ground during a dark stormy night in 1977, while silently traveling from Turkey to Italy. Dimitrios and its cargo were abandoned that night, after losing a long harsh battle with Mother Nature, while all the crew members were rescued and brought to shore by local fisherman in the area.
Gythio is located in the middle south peninsula of Peloponnese, Greece at the center of the Laconia Gulf.
